Day 3

Wyoming is a beautiful place. Who would have thought that a small town such as Shell, you could find such beauty? This is a picture of Shell Creek.

After taking that picture, we started making our way into the Big Horn Mountains. We didn’t get far when we started hearing the familiar thump of a flat tire. After much inspection and contemplation about what we would do if we got stuck there, we realized that a large rock had gotten imbedded into one of the tires. God isn’t without a sense of humor!

And He creates such beautiful things. This is Shell Falls.

The drive through the Big Horn Mountains was scary. We have seen nothing but rain and our path took us up into the clouds. The scenery was amazing, when we could see. Otherwise, we were in dense fog (is it still called fog if it’s actually clouds?) and could hardly see in front of us. It took us a good hour to get through the pass, but such a beautiful reward at the end.

We never would have thought that Wyoming was such a beautiful state! Once we got onto I-90, we could see rolling hills for miles and miles…and miles…and, oh look! We’re in South Dakota.

We were finally off to see Mount Rushmore. Chelle had her turn at white-knuckling the steering wheel when she had to pass a semi in the rain and a wall of water came up at the windshield. The drive has been nothing short of an adventure so far! Still, it would have been nice to have better weather. All that work and here it is…Mount Rushmore.

After some time in the gift shop for much needed sweatshirts (it was 90º weather when we left. We’re lucky we had the forethought to pack jackets), we returned to the monument to find a break in the clouds (and a nice lady willing to take our picture).

We decided to make it an earlier day since we were running late and we were exhausted. We found the Lazy J RV park which offered, amongst it’s many amenities, WiFi (really, would you expect anything else?).

Jacob has been traveling so well. Chelle got him to laugh before his bath, which made him scream. Such extremes with him sometimes (Wonder where he got that trait from…hint: His mommy). Again, not so much with the sleeping for this child. He sleep-fusses all night long. Chelle decided to try swaddling him again and he did pretty good (after 4 in the morning).

Tomorrow we are off to see the Ingersoll’s (long time friends of Chelle) in Wisconsin. If we don’t stop too many times, we should make it there in time for dinner. We have some ground to make up! Luckily, we don’t plan to leave their house until 10 am the next morning, and then it’s off to Niagara Falls.

The Mount Rushmore picture (the one you can actually see) is great. The foggy one would totally be something that would happen to Sim and I. When we went to DC last summer I swear half the things I wanted to see were closed. :(
